Support H.R. 2096 to restore staffing levels to the MPD

The District of Columbia ended 2023 with violent crime up 39% from 2022. D.C. residents and business owners are under siege. Everyone — including members of Congress, staff and tourists — is bearing the consequences.

Repeal the Comprehensive Policing and Justice Reform Act of 2020

Three years ago, the D.C. City Council began quietly forcing your Metropolitan Police Officers out the door when they passed the Comprehensive Policing and Justice Reform Act of 2020, which stripped D.C. police officers of their basic employee and due process rights.

About DC Police Union

The DC Police Union represents the 3,000 officers, detectives, and sergeants who make up the District of Columbia’s Metropolitan Police Department. Our officers are committed to protecting the residents of Washington — and we are committed to helping protect our officers.

By working together with residents, we have made great strides in reducing crime in our neighborhoods. And while DC is much safer than many of us remember decades ago, we still have a long way to go to make our city a safe place for all residents. As a union, representing our officers and fighting to improve their working conditions — we’re fighting for DC to become a safer city.

DC Police Union Mourns the Line-Of-Duty Death of Officer Terry Bennett

Posted on Thursday, January 08, 2026

The DC Police Union joins in mourning the tragic line-of-duty loss of Officer Terry Bennett.

Officer Bennett, an eight-year member of the Metropolitan Police Department, lost his life on December 23, 2025, after being struck by a vehicle while rendering assistance to a stranded motorist on I-695. His commitment to service and to the residents of the District defined his career and reflected the very best of this profession.

We offer our sincere condolences to Officer Bennett’s family, friends, and fellow officers. The sacrifice he made in the service of others will not be forgotten, and his dedication to duty will forever be remembered by the law enforcement community.

May he rest in eternal peace, and may his loved ones find strength in the honor of his service.

💙 Standing with Officer Emily Painten 💙

The DC Police Union is asking our community to rally around Emily, a dedicated officer assigned to the Executive Protection Unit, as she faces a challenging road ahead.

On November 14, Emily was diagnosed with Invasive Ductal Carcinoma. After meeting with her doctors, a treatment plan was developed to begin addressing the cancer. Unfortunately, following a PET scan, additional areas of concern were discovered, delaying chemotherapy.

On December 23, doctors confirmed another cancerous tumor in a lymph node located in front of her heart.

Emily began the most intensive chemotherapy regimen on December 29, with doctors focusing first on treating the lymph nodes. She has a long and difficult road ahead, including continued treatment, reconstructive surgery, and radiation.

While VA healthcare has been incredible, it will not cover the entirety of Emily’s treatment plan. If you are able, we are asking for donations to help support her medical expenses. Every dollar raised will go directly to Emily.

If you are unable to donate, sharing this message and keeping Emily in your prayers and thoughts is just as meaningful and appreciated.

Thank you for standing with one of our own. 💙
Strength, prayers, and solidarity for Emily and her family.
