DC Crime Summary - February 2nd - 8th

There was one homicide and multiple violent crimes this week in the District. A 56-year-old D.C. man was stabbed to death Saturday at a residence in the 400 block of H Street NW, police said. Gregory Monroe had multiple stab wounds when officers arrived on the scene around 5:45 p.m., D.C. police said. Monroe was rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to his injuries. Police did not say whether there were any suspects. Police are conducting a death investigation after an infant, who was found unconscious Wednesday night in Northeast, D.C., later died. The incident was reported Wednesday just before 10:30 p.m. along the 600 block of New York Avenue. Investigators say the infant was unconscious when they arrived. The infant, who was under two-weeks-old, was pronounced dead after being transported to a nearby hospital. Parents in Southeast DC were on high alert Sunday night after a picture went viral showing a man with his belt unbuckled. One mother said the man approached three young girls with a knife. “They were saying ‘Mom. Mom. It’s a guy around the corner with a knife,’ Natasha Robinson told WUSA9. Robinson was scared to show her face on camera because she is getting threats after posting the picture. • D.C. police have released surveillance video of two suspects who robbed an 81-year-old man in a wheelchair along with his cab driver and caretaker. Police said the armed robbery happened last Friday at around 11:33 a.m. in an alley on Franklin Street just off of North Capitol Street in Northeast D.C. The victim in the wheelchair, Alfred Barnes, is a double amputee who is also going blind. While the thieves didn’t get away with much, Barnes and his wife, Audrey, said they are shaken by the crime. D.C. police are asking for the public’s help finding an armed carjack suspect who they say took a Black 1997 Lexus in the 1800 block of Savannah St., SE. Authorities released a look out for two suspects with the following description: Suspect (1) 5’2”-5’3” tall, dark complexion, wearing a black jacket and black pants. Suspect (2) 5’4” tall, wearing a green jacket, blue jeans, with short dreadlocks. Police say the stolen vehicle has a DC tag with the number “FL8297” and ask that anyone with information contact them at (202) 727-9099.

According to police, homicide detectives are investigating after 56-year-old Gregory Monroe was found with multiple stab wounds inside an apartment at the 400 block of H Street NW at around 5:45 p.m. Monroe was rushed to the hospital, where he died.”

NBC Washington: Teenager arrested in three robberies in the same block “A teenager was arrested last week in connection with three separate robberies, all on the same block of Southeast Washington, the D.C. police said. Two of the robberies, in which a gun was shown, occurred on the same day, only five minutes apart, according to a police statement issued Sunday. The first of those two occurred about 7:55 p.m. on Oct. 16, the police said. The second, according, to the police occurred about 8 p.m.

Fox5DC: Pedestrian fatally struck by bus near African American History Museum in DC “A male pedestrian has died after being struck and then getting trapped underneath the rear wheels of a commuter bus outside of the National Museum of African American History and Culture, according to officials. Police say the man was struck by an OmniRide bus on 14th Street near Constitution Avenue in Northwest D.C. at around 4:33 p.m. Wednesday.”

Fox5DC: 10 vehicles involved in crash in Northwest DC “Police in the District say ten vehicles were involved in a crash Monday morning in the Northwest. The crash happened along westbound Military Road between 14th Street and Beach Drive around 6:30 a.m. Images from the scene show a school bus was also involved in the crash. A salt truck has been dispatched to the area. It is unclear if the icy conditions caused the crash. Military Road, between 14th Street and Beach Drive, remain closed at this time.”

NBC Washington: Man Killed by Bus on National Mall Dove In Front of It, Police Say “A man who was fatally struck by a bus on the National Mall intentionally threw himself in front of the vehicle, police say. The victim has been identified as a 39-year-old man from Springfield, Virginia. The OmniRide Bus driver told police he was driving past the National Museum of African American History and Culture when the man yelled something and dove in front of the bus.”

NBC Washington: DC Mormon Leader, 61, Dies After Carbon Monoxide Exposure “A top leader in the Washington area’s Mormon community has died following carbon monoxide exposure. James Richard Baird, the president of the Washington, D.C. stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, died Thursday. “Everyone I’ve ever talked to that knew him felt like he was their best friend,” his son, Joseph Baird, told News4. “We felt very loved growing up.”“

Washington Post: Van careens into nursing home in Northeast Washington “The driver of a nursing home van apparently lost control of the vehicle and crashed through the wall of the Northeast facility Thursday, D.C. fire officials said. No injuries were reported after the van demolished the rear wall of a nursing facility in 4500 block of Edson Place NE about 5:30 p.m., officials said. Photos taken at the scene show the van apparently ended up in the facility’s kitchen, with the ceiling collapsed around the vehicle.”
