DC Crime Summary - February 23rd - March 1st

There were two homicides and several violent crimes this week in the District. • A man was shot and gravely wounded Tuesday night near the southern tip of the District, according to D.C. police. The man was unconscious and was not breathing when found, the police said. He was shot near South Capitol and Forrester Street SE, said Officer Hugh Carew, a police spokesman. No information could be learned about any motive in the shooting. An initial report said three people, all male, ran from the scene. The site is about a half mile from the border between the District and Prince George’s County. A man was struck and killed by a vehicle in Southeast D.C. while crossing the street, police say. The crash happened near Wheeler Road and Alabama Avenue around 3 a.m. An SUV struck the pedestrian and then slammed into a tree. Power lines and wires were downed as a result of the crash. Police say that the driver was taken into police custody. One woman was stabbed Wednesday night during an attack in the Columbia Heights neighborhood of Northwest Washington, D.C. police said. Authorities found the woman conscious and breathing in the 1400 block of Girard Street about 9:53 p.m., said Officer Hugh Carew, a police spokesman. Police were called to investigate the report of an aggravated assault in progress, Carew said. Three people were hurt during a drive-by shooting Saturday night outside the Shaw-Howard University Metro station, police said. Shots were fired from a dark-colored sedan about 10:30 p.m.outside the Metro station entrance at 8th and R streets Northwest. Police said the shooting victims were conscious and breathing, and their injuries do not appear life threatening. Police are searching for four suspects. • Police say a man was stabbed multiple times in front of a cheese steak shop early Sunday morning in Adams Morgan. D.C. police say they were flagged down at around 3 a.m. Sunday at the 2400 block of Champlain Street NW by two women and a man, and told them the man had been stabbed. Investigators say the victim was suffering from multiple stab wounds to the back and abdomen with evisceration of his intestines. Police are investigating the cause of the stabbing. Investigators have not identified any suspect or suspects.

No information could be learned about any motive in the shooting. An initial report said three people, all male, ran from the scene. Washington Post: Man dies after being found injured in the District “A man found gravely wounded Tuesday night near the southern tip of the District has died from his injuries, according to D.C. police. Police initially said they believed the man had been shot. On Wednesday, though, they said they had not conclusively determined how the man had been injured. They said he suffered trauma to the head and they were awaiting results of an autopsy.”

Fox5DC: Pedestrian struck, killed by SUV in Southeast DC “A man was struck and killed by a vehicle in Southeast D.C. while crossing the street, police say. The crash happened near Wheeler Road and Alabama Avenue around 3 a.m. FOX 5’s Annie Yu reports that an SUV struck the pedestrian and then slammed into a tree. Washington Post: Woman sexually assaulted in Southeast D.C. “D.C. police are seeking help from the public identifying a man who allegedly sexually assaulted a woman in Southeast D.C. early Saturday. The alleged assault occurred at approximately 1 a.m. in the 3500 block of 19th Street SE., where the victim was entering her home, according to a news release. The suspect, who carried a handgun, forced the victim into her residence and assaulted her before fleeing, police said. Police described the suspect as a male wearing a black sweatshirt with a hood. They are requesting that anyone with knowledge of the incident call them at (202) 727-9099 or text the department’s tip line at 50411.”

Washington Post: Woman stabbed in Northwest Washington attack “One woman was stabbed Wednesday night during an attack in the Columbia Heights neighborhood of Northwest Washington, D.C. police said. Fox5DC: Police: Crash in Northeast DC linked to unarmed carjacking, 1 person detained “One person has been detained after a crash in Northeast D.C., which police say is related to an unarmed carjacking. Police say the crash happened at Benning Rd. at Minnesota Ave NE. Two women and an infant were in the car vehicle, according to the investigators. They say there were no visible injuries to the infant, who was taken to hospital as a precaution. Police say the investigation is ongoing.

Fox5DC: Woman arrested for driving van into White House barrier ordered to undergo mental health evaluation “A Tennessee woman accused of intentionally ramming a van into a security barrier near the White House has been ordered to undergo a mental health evaluation following an appearance in federal court on Monday. Jessica Ford is facing several charges after being arrested by the Secret Service last Friday after her vehicle struck a barricade located at 17th and E streets in Northwest D.C. at the White House complex. The incident led to a temporary lockdown at the White House. No law enforcement officers were injured and no shots were fired during the incident.”

Fox5DC: Police barricade situation ends; streets reopen in Northeast DC “A barricade situation in Northeast D.C. has ended with no injuries being reported. The incident was reported around 11:48 a.m.1300 block of 4th Street. Photos and videos from FOX 5 user Ben Florance who was at the scene showed a large police response at the location. Officers said the person involved in the barricade situation may have been armed with a gun. The 1300 block of 4th Street and the intersection of 4th Street and New York Avenue were closed for several hours.”

Fox5DC: Police search for 17-year-old girl missing from DC “Police are continuing their search for a 17-year-old girl last seen in the District on Friday. Andria Blount was reported missing after she was last seen around 10 a.m. on February 23 in the 5000 block of Kimi Gray Court in Southeast, D.C. Blount is described as a black female with a dark brown complexion. She is 5-feet-1-inch tall and weighs 160 pounds. She has dark hair and brown eyes. Blount was last seen wearing a black coat, tan pants, and red shoes. She may also be in need of medication.”

Fox5DC: Firefighters rescue infant, residents from wind driven apartment fire “Nearly a dozen residents of a Southeast D.C. apartment complex, including an infant, were rescued after a fire that was fueled by the heavy winds trapped them inside. The fire was reported just before 7 a.m. in the 1200 block Maple View Place. Firefighters used ladders to rescue the residents from the 3-story complex. The Red Cross was requested as an undetermined number of residents have been displaced.”

Fox5DC: Sinkhole displaces woman from Northeast DC home “A woman in northeast D.C. is now living in a hotel after she said a sinkhole opened up and caused major damage near her home. Willistene Montgomery told FOX 5 that the sinkhole developed in late February. She told us that since she evacuated she has not been allowed to go back inside of her home. Montgomery said she found the massive hole when she noticed her fence was down in the rear of the house. Willistene told us that the Red Cross provided her with a hotel room for a few days but now she is paying for the costs out of pocket. She has been unable to reach anyone from the District to help.”

NBC Washington: DC Sees Increase in Bike Crashes “The next time you are driving around D.C. make sure you’re paying extra close attention to your surroundings whether you’re on two or four wheels. The city is seeing an uptick in the number of bicycle-related collisions. Transportation reporter Adam Tuss went out for a ride today and has a look at the new numbers.”
