The suspect stole the police cruiser from the 600 block of Pennsylvania Avenue SE about 1 a.m., police say. Officers pursued the suspect for a short distance before the suspect crashed two miles away on the 600 block of F Street SE. Police have not released the suspect’s name but say the person was arrested at the scene.

NBC Washington: Suspect in Stolen Police Car Arrested After Short Chase in DC “One person is in police custody after stealing a police cruiser and leading officers on a short chase in Southeast Washington Wednesday morning. Washington Post: Gunman robs Dupont Circle 7-Eleven ” A man armed with a handgun robbed a 7-Eleven convenience store early Tuesday on Connecticut Avenue in the Dupont Circle neighborhood, according to D.C. police. Police said the man walked into the store in the 1600 block of Connecticut Avenue NW, at R Street, about 1:10 a.m. Police said he approached a cashier with his shirt up, showing the butt of a gun.”

NBC Washington: Hungry Thief Breaks Into NW DC Chipotle, Eats Barbacoa Meat, Drinks Juice “A man broke into a Chipotle restaurant in northwest Washington, D.C., sat down, and ate some food before leaving the location, according to D.C. police. A police report said the general manager of the restaurant found the man inside a Chipotle restaurant on the 600 block of F Street Northwest shortly after 6 a.m. on Jan. 1. The general manager said the man ate a tray of barbacoa meat and drank an apple juice after the man broke into the location just after 3 a.m.”

Fox5D: Woman hospitalized after jumping from DC apartment window to escape fire “A woman is in critical condition after jumping from her apartment window to escape a fire that broke out overnight in the District. The fire was reported in the 100 block of Wayne Place in the Southeast. Investigators say the woman jumped before they arrived on the scene. The fire appeared to have started on the second floor of the three-story apartment.”

Fox5DC: Police investigating why 2 teen cousins reported missing in DC ended up in New Jersey with 4 men “wo teenage cousins from Washington D.C. were reported missing last week, but are home safe thanks to two New Jersey police officers. The two girls, ages 11 and 17, were both reported missing on Jan. 5. On the following day, officers in Haddon Heights, New Jersey spotted a disabled U-Haul van with Arizona plates on the side of the road. After checking things out, they discovered there was no furniture or personal possessions inside the vehicle.At a nearby restaurant, the officers located the missing girls along with four men who were arrested.”

NBC Washington: DC Council Passes Women’s Health, Birth Control Access Bill “The D.C. Council unanimously passed a health bill that would allow women to get birth control without a doctor’s prescription, leaving the mayor and Congress to accept or reject the measure. The Defending Access to Women’s Health Care Services Amendment Act of 2017 would allow pharmacists to prescribe birth control, meaning women wouldn’t have to schedule a doctor’s visit for a prescription. D.C. would be the eighth state to support such a law, NBC Washington reported in December.”

Washington Post: D.C. Council unanimously votes to create public campaign finance program ” The D.C. Council unanimously backed publicly financed campaigns Tuesday, a move lauded by clean-government advocates in a city long plagued by its association with a pay-to-play culture. Supporters say the program will open local politics to new candidates, increase the power of small donors and reduce the influence of deep-pocketed campaign contributors. But critics — most notably Mayor Muriel E. Bowser (D) — say the program, estimated to cost D.C. taxpayers $5 million a year, will waste precious funds.”
