Summary

Police are investigating a fatal shooting in Southeast D.C. Monday evening. Police say they received a call at around 5:22 p.m. about a shooting in the 1800 block of Bruce Place. Authorities found a male victim shot at the scene. He would later die from his injuries. Police have not confirmed the victim’s age or identity, but an ANC commissioner and a youth worker both say the victim was a teenage boy and the shooting happened on a basketball court near the Douglass Community Center. • The same robber, apparently armed with a pistol, has held up convenience stores in the District five times since the day after Thanksgiving, the D.C. police said. In the first of the holdups, a convenience store was robbed in the 900 block of Bladensburg Road NE about 2:20 a.m., the police said. In the most recent of the robberies, money was taken at gunpoint from a store, possibly the same one, in the same block of Bladensburg Road, the police said.

NBC Washington: ‘What if She Doesn’t Come Back?’ Mother ‘Traumatized’ After 3-Year-Old Picked Up by Stranger at NW DC School “A mother said she was traumatized after coming to pick up her young daughter from school and being told the 3-year-old had been sent with a stranger. When the normal school day at Cleveland Elementary School ended at 3:15 p.m., the girl went to an aftercare program as usual. Around 5 p.m., a man came to pick up his 3-year-old niece. Staff then allowed him to leave a child he wasn’t authorized to pick up.”

Washington Post: Former D.C. area police officer found guilty of trying to back Islamic State “A former police officer for the D.C. Metro system tried to help the Islamic State and obstructed justice, a jury in Alexandria federal court decided Monday. Nicholas Young, a 37-year-old Muslim convert from Alexandria, Va., is the first law enforcement officer ever to face terrorism charges. He was caught last year in an FBI sting operation after helping a man he thought had joined the Islamic State.”

Fox5DC: Court docs: Several men took over DC man’s apartment to stash drugs, guns 2 months before murder “There has been an arrest made in the January murder of a 66-year old D.C. man who told police drug dealers had taken over his apartment. Awlachew Ayele was found dead after a fire tore through his unit on Queen Street in Northeast D.C. – one day after he filed a complaint with the police. Nearly 11 months later, police have arrested 40-year-old Garrett Taylor with first-degree murder.”

NBC Washington: Two Women, Dog Rescued From NE DC Apartment Fire “Two people and a dog were rescued from an apartment building in northeast Washington, D.C., on Monday evening. Fire crews were called to the 1400 block of Downing Street NE around 9 p.m. for a fire on the first floor. They were able to knock down the fire quickly and rescued one woman from the apartment. The victim was transported to the hospital with injuries described as critical and life-threatening. A firefighter was also taken to the hospital with non-serious injuries.”

Washington Post: Watchdog report finds moldy food, mistreatment in immigrant detention centers “The inspector general for the Department of Homeland Security has criticized several immigration detention facilities for having spoiled and moldy food and inadequate medical care, and for inappropriate treatment of detainees, such as locking down a detainee for sharing coffee and interfering with Muslims’ prayer times.”

Fox5DC: Dry ice to be used in new DC rat abatement program “D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser will take another step towards decreasing the rodent population in the District. The mayor is set to participate in a community walk in Ward 6 this afternoon where she will demonstrate an innovative rat abatement tactic using dry ice. The use of dry ice has led to a 95 percent reduction in rodent activity in Boston and has also been used in cities like Chicago and New York.”

Washington Post: Bowser mandates sexual harassment training for 30,000 District employees “D.C. Mayor Muriel E. Bowser (D) signed an order Monday mandating that all 30,000 city employees complete sexual harassment training by February 2018. Bowser’s administration began a review of the District’s policies in November in light of the growing national spotlight on sexual harassment.”
