DC Crime Summary - September 15th - 22nd 2017

There were three homicides and several violent crimes this week in the District. • A 16-year-old boy who was shot and killed while defending himself during a robbery attempt on a Northeast D.C. street corner fatally wounded his attacker, according to police. Officers say Zaire Kelly was a student at Thurgood Marshall Academy and was walking home from a convenience store near 13th Street and Downing Street Wednesday at about 9:15 p.m. when he was approached by the gunman. A 16-year-old boy died Sunday after he was shot multiple times in Southeast D.C., police said. Police are investigating the death of MyAngelo Starnes, of southeast Washington, as a homicide. Police responded about 8:15 p.m. after an electronic gunshot detection system alerted them to sounds of gunfire. • A woman was killed in a car crash in Southeast D.C. early Sunday after another driver crashed into the car she was riding in head-on, police say. Two other people are seriously hurt. One person was killed and three others were injured in a two-vehicle crash in southeast Washington early Sunday morning. Fire officials said the collision occurred at the intersection of Good Hope Road and Altamont Place, Southeast. The crash pinned three people inside their vehicles. D.C. police have charged two men in a Thursday afternoon shooting that injured two people outside an apartment complex in the Shaw neighborhood. Police described a destructive scene in a crowded courtyard, with bullets striking vehicles and the windows of homes. • A 30-year-old man was arrested Monday and charged with sexually assaulting a teenage boy on the platform of the Union Station Metro, according to D.C. police. Timothy Cox of Northeast, was charged with second-degree child sexual abuse. • A fourth woman has told police that a massage therapist who worked in D.C. and Maryland touched her inappropriately. The woman told police that Habtamu Gebreselassie, 24, touched a private area without her consent at a massage parlor on the 2000 block of P Street NW in D.C. in mid-June, a police report shows.

NBC Washington: Woman Killed in Head-On Crash in Southeast DC “A woman was killed in a car crash in Southeast D.C. early Sundayafter another driver crashed into the car she was riding in head-on, police say. Two other people are seriously hurt. Talata Williams, of Southeast D.C., died after she was hurt in a crash about 12:30 a.m. Sunday on the 2400 block of Good Hope Road SE, D.C. police said Monday. Williams was 43.”
NBC Washington: 11-Year-Old Boy Hit by Vehicle, Injured in Northeast DC “An 11-year-old boy was hit by a vehicle and injured Tuesdaymorning in Northeast D.C., police say. The boy was hit on the 4200 block of Benning Road SE. Police were called about 8:45 a.m. The boy ran into the road and was struck, police said in an update.”

Washington Post: Police charge man with sexually assaulting teenager at Union Station Metro “A 30-year-old man was arrested Mondayand charged with sexually assaulting a teenage boy on the platform of the Union Station Metro, according to D.C. police. Timothy Cox of Northeast, was charged with second-degree child sexual abuse.”

NBC Washington: Massage Envy Worker Now Accused in 4th Sex Abuse Case “A fourth woman has told police that a massage therapist who worked in D.C. and Maryland touched her inappropriately. Washington Post: Two people injured during apartment fire in NE DC “Two people were treated for injuries suffered during a kitchen fire inside a Northeast Washington apartment Thursday night, D.C. fire and emergency services officials said. Firefighters extinguished the fire that resulted from cooking in a top floor unit in a three story building in the 1700 block of Benning Road, officials said.”

NBC Washington: Juggalos, Trump Supporters and Critics Gather in Washington “The National Parks Service braced for crowds in the thousands, but as the events opened there were sparse groups of people gathered on the north end of the mall near the Washington Monument.”

Fox5DC: 4 hurt in early morning crash in Northeast DC “Four people were injured after a crash in Northeast D.C. The one car accident happened on Mount Olivet Road near 16th Street around 2:30 a.m. Monday.”

Fox5DC: DC looking into proposal of setting up supervised injection sites for drug users “More than 200 people died in the District last year from opioid overdoses, which is a 160 percent increase from two years before. D.C. leaders say drastic measures are needed to stop overdoses, and some are considering a plan that may surprise you.”

Fox5DC: Lincoln Memorial vandal engraves letters with penny, police say “A vandal has been arrested after police say he was caught engraving letters into the Lincoln Memorial on Monday. U.S. Park Police say an officer caught the suspect using a penny to engrave the letters “HYPT MAEK” into the fifth pillar on the north side of the Lincoln Memorial.”

NBC Washington: Funeral to Be Held for Homeless Baby Girl After Online Fundraiser Surpasses Goal “A homeless infant girl will finally be laid to rest more than a month after her death. The 4-week-old baby, named Ida, died of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome on Aug. 4 at a hotel on New York Avenue, where the city houses homeless families. The child’s family could not afford to give her a proper burial.”

NBC Washington: Swastika, threat found painted on bathroom stall in Georgetown University dorm “A disturbing discovery was made at Georgetown University Wednesday night when a swastika and a threatening message were found painted on the inside of a stall in a women’s dormitory bathroom. This is the third time in the past few weeks that swastikas have been found in a residence hall at Georgetown. The latest incident happened at the LXR residence hall and comes in the midst of the Jewish holiday of Rosh Hashanah.”
