As most of you are aware, the Executive Council of the DC Police Union brought to you a proposed Bylaw change to increase the dues we pay. On behalf of the entire Metropolitan Police Labor Committee’s Executive Council, I want to thank each and every one of you who participated in yesterday’s vote.
Yesterday’s vote was to amend Bylaw 3.3. Bylaw 3.3 controls the amount of dues paid by each member to the Union. Currently, the Union is collecting “1% of the entry level (members) salary” in dues. Today’s vote, however, was to amend the language of Bylaw 3.3 to “2% of the entry level (members) salary”. This was a thoughtful and deliberate action brought to you by the Executive Council, after a thorough evaluation of our current financial situation. The increased dues would have secured the future of our Union for years to come, and provided, in my opinion, top notch representation and enhanced services for our members.
In order for any Bylaw to be amended a minimum of 250 members must vote. Of that 250 members, ⅔ (66%) must vote “Yes”. Today’s vote yielded 633 total votes. Of those: 397 were “Yes” votes and 236 were “No” votes. Resulting in a passage vote of 62.7%. This was just 21 votes below the ⅔ needed to amend Bylaw 3.3.
Bylaw 3.3, therefore, will not be amended.
Again, I want to thank all of our members for taking the time to deliberate on what they believed was best for their Union. While I am disappointed in yesterday’s outcome, it will not influence myself, or any member of the Executive Council, from moving forward, providing excellent representation, and continuing to fight for our members every day.
As always be safe and watch each others’ backs.
