Fact Check: Has crime decreased during Chief Lanier’s tenure? – False

Last Thursday, August 27th, Mayor Muriel Bowser tweeted that during Chief Lanier’s tenure crime has been reduced by 50%.

However, after some analysis it is clear that this is not the case. Cathy Lanier assumed her status as the Chief of the Metropolitan Police Department on January 2nd, 2007.

During her first year of office (2007), there were 34,082 total crimes in the District according to MPD’s 2007 Annual Report.

And last year, there were 38,570 total crimes in the District according to MPD’s 2014 Annual Report.

Subtracting the 2007 total from the 2014 total, you end up with 4,488 more crimes in 2014 than 2007, which equates to a 13% increase.

Mayor Muriel Bowser’s statement – Chief Cathy Lanier “is responsible for over a 50% reduction in crime during her tenure” – is blatantly false.
