DC Crime Summary – May 26th - June 1st, 2017
There were several homicides and violent crimes reported in the District this week • DeAndre Riley, 25, was fatally shot Tuesday night in the Carver-Langston neighborhood. No suspect information is available at this time, and authorities are actively investigating the incident. • Chad E. Hawthorne, 36, was arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of Antonio Bassett, 35, on Monday, May 22nd. The suspect was formally charged with second-degree murder. • Wayne Joaquin, 24, was fatally shot Saturday morning in the Lincoln Heights neighborhood. No suspect information is available at this time, and authorities are investigating the incident. • Algernon Harvey Jones, 32, was shot and killed near Truxton Circle in Northwest early Saturday morning. Six other men and a woman were also injured in the shooting, and DC Police are actively investigating the incident. • A woman stabbed a man in the arm in the parking lot of a Giant grocery store in the Douglass neighborhood late Wednesday night. According to reports, the suspect and victim were in an argument, when the suspect pulled out a knife and started slashing the victim’s tires and ultimately stabbed the man. • Bryan Moles, 43, was arrested Wednesday for bringing a military-style rifle to the Trump hotel and requesting to meet with the President.

WJLA: Police: Woman slashes tires of vehicle in parking lot of DC grocery store, stabs man “A man was stabbed by a woman who also slashed the tires of a vehicle in the parking lot of a Giant grocery store in the 1500 block of Alabama Ave., SE, D.C. Wednesday evening, authorities said. ”
Washington Post: Man found with military-style rifle at Trump hotel wanted to ‘bring down big pharmacy’ and meet president “A Pennsylvania man arrested at Trump International Hotel in downtown Washington after a military-style rifle was found in his vehicle was ordered released from detention Thursday despite having said that he came to the District with guns and ammunition to meet with President Trump.”
Washington Post: Man, 25, fatally shot in Carver-Langston area of Northeast Washington “A 25-year-old man was fatally shot Tuesday night in the Carver-Langston neighborhood of Northeast Washington, according to D.C. police. The victim was identified as DeAndre Riley of Southeast.”
Washington Post: D.C. police charge Southeast Washington man in fatal shooting “D.C. police arrested a 36-year-old man Wednesday and charged him in a fatal shooting May 22 in Southeast Washington, authorities said.”
Washington Post: D.C. taxi driver arrested and charged with sex abuse and kidnapping “D.C. police arrested Yared Geremew Mekonnen, 24, of Silver Spring on charges of second-degree sex abuse and kidnapping, according to police and court documents. He is scheduled for a hearing Thursday and was being detained.”
Fox5DC: Noose found inside African American History Museum in DC “A noose was found inside the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture on Wednesday. The noose was located by a tourist at around 1 p.m. in the museum’s segregation exhibition. The exhibition was shut down for about an hour before reopening.”
NBC Washington: Truxton Circle Neighbors March Against Crime After Shooting “People who live in the Truxton Circle neighborhood of Northwest D.C. are banding together against crime after a fatal shooting. News4’s Shomari Stone spoke with a long-time resident about living amid violence.”
Washington Post: Two fatal shootings during Memorial Day weekend “A man was fatally shot Saturday afternoon in Northeast Washington in the second fatal shooting of the holiday weekend, and at least seven other shootings were reported in the city over the three-day period.”
Washington Post: Man killed and seven others wounded in Shaw shooting “A 32-year-old District man was fatally shot and seven others suffered gunshot wounds early Saturday a few blocks from a rapidly gentrifying area on the border of Shaw and Bloomingdale, police said.”
Washington Post: Three shootings, two stabbings in five hours in DC “More shots were fired in a northwest Washington neighborhood two days after eight people were shot, killing one man.”
WJLA: Teen charged for allegedly shooting man inside his car in Northeast D.C. “A teen was charged on May 28 for allegedly shooting a man inside his car in Oct. 2016 in Northeast Washington. Tayon Wright was charged as an adult with assault with intent to kill, according to police.”
Public Safety Update
WJLA: Woman struck by vehicle in D.C., transported to hospital with serious injuries “An elderly woman was transported to the hospital in critical condition after she was struck by a vehicle in Southeast Tuesday evening, D.C. Fire and EMS officials report.”
Washington Post: Female bicyclist seriously injured in Capitol Hill crash “A woman was struck by a car while she was riding a bicycle Tuesday on Capitol Hill. The woman’s condition was not clear. The D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department described it as serious. However, the D.C. police said the woman was in critical condition when taken to a hospital.”

Fox5DC: 280,000 flags placed at gravesites at Arlington National Cemetery “Thousands of soldiers are honoring our fallen heroes as Memorial Day weekend approaches. Soldiers from the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment took part in the time-honored “Flags-In” tradition, placing American flags at the gravesites at Arlington National Cemetery.”
