DC Crime Summary – July 7th - 13th, 2017
There were two homicides and several violent crimes this week in the District. • One man was killed and another wounded in a shooting in Georgetown early Saturday, according to D.C. police. No arrests were made in connection with the shooting, and police did not comment on a possible motive. • Police say a 1-year-old boy has been shot in Northeast D.C. Monday night. Police are talking to witnesses in the area to try to identify suspects in the shooting. • Dalane Scales was standing on a well-lit sidewalk near his parked car in Southeast Washington early Saturday when an intoxicated driver rammed her vehicle onto the curb and fatally struck the 47-year-old man, according to charging documents. • Officials say arson is to blame for a house fire in southeast D.C. early Sunday morning. The fire broke out around 2 a.m. in the 3900 block of Wheeler Road. No arrests have been made and officials are actively investigating the incident. • A 16-year-old boy has been charged with murder after a double-shooting left a man dead and a juvenile male seriously injured on July 5 in Northeast Washington.

Washington Post: Shooting leaves one dead and another wounded in Georgetown “One man was killed and another wounded in a shooting in Georgetown early Saturday, according to D.C. police. The shooting happened in the 3500 Block of Water Street shortly before 3 a.m., police said. Police said Kennedy Javier Amaya-Olivares, 19, of Severn, Maryland, died on the scene. A second victim, whose name has not been disclosed, was taken to the hospital for treatment of serious injuries. No arrests were made in connection with the shooting, and police did not comment on a possible motive.”
Fox5DC: 1-year-old child shot in Northeast DC “D.C. Police Chief Peter Newsham says officers responded to the 1300 block of I Street for a shooting in an alley at around 8:50 p.m. Their preliminary investigation found that gunfire was exchanged as a group was gathered outside in the area and the child was wounded at least once in the lower extremities.”
Washington Post: Man dies after being struck by vehicle on a sidewalk in D.C. “Dalane Scales was standing on a well-lit sidewalk near his parked car in Southeast Washington early Saturday when an intoxicated driver rammed her vehicle onto the curb and fatally struck the 47-year-old man, according to charging documents. Briana Miller, 33, of Maryland was charged with second-degree murder in Scales’s death, according to the charging documents filed in D.C. Superior Court.”
Washington Post: Investigation continues into shooting of 1-year-old in Northeast Washington “D.C. police continued Tuesday to investigate a shooting in a Northeast Washington alley that wounded a 1-year-old but announced no arrests or new leads.”
NBC Washington: Man Arrested in Hit-and-Run That Injured Transgender Woman in Northeast DC “D.C. police say they’ve arrested a man who is accused of purposely running down a transgender woman and driving away in Northeast last week.”
Washington Post: D.C. police arrest 16-year-old in killing of man who had turned life around “A 16-year-old has been arrested in the killing last week of a man who had years earlier escaped the District’s violent streets through a work program and had become a construction engineer, D.C. police said on Thursday. Lamont McDonald of Southeast has been charged as an adult with second-degree murder while armed, police said in a statement. He was arrested on a warrant on Wednesday.”
Fox5DC: D.C. firefighters say arson is to blame for an overnight house fire “D.C. firefighters say arson is to blame for a house fire in southeast D.C. early Sunday morning. The fire broke out around 2 a.m. in the 3900 block of Wheeler Road. Someone used an accelerant to set the house on fire, according to fire officials.”

Fox5DC: Fire destroys house in Northwest DC; 2 residents evaluated “Two residents have been taken to the hospital for evaluation after a fire broke out at their house in Northwest D.C. The fire was reported around 4:30 a.m. in the 4300 block of 7th Street. Authorities say they fought flames on both floors of the house and on the porch. No cause for the fire has been determined.”
Fox5DC: DC firefighters encounter delays in requests for additional units in 2 recent fires “In the last two weeks, commanders at the scene of two major fires in the District have asked for extra crews to help. However, they did not arrive as fast as it should have due to issues with 911 computers.”
NBC Washington: ‘It’s a Mess’: New York Avenue to Get Safety Overhaul “The D.C. transportation department is looking at ways to make New York Avenue safer for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers.”
