DC Crime Summary – July 28th - August 3rd, 2017

There were six homicides and several violent crimes in the District this week. • Ten people have been shot in less than 24 hours in D.C. over the weekend—including two men who died. D.C. police are actively investigating the incidents and no arrests have been made. • A man was shot and killed Sunday afternoon in Northeast Washington, D. C. police said. The shooting occurred about 3:30 p.m. in the 4400 block of Quarles Street NE and police are actively investigating the incident. A man was killed and three others injured in a shooting late Thursday evening. DC police said the suspect opened fire at an Exxon gas station in the 3400 block of 18th Street, NE at about 7:45 p.m. Police are searching for a vehicle they believe is connected to a shooting in Northeast, D.C. that left one man injured. The shooting happened around 4:30 a.m. on the 4400 block of Ponds Street. Two men were arrested in Northwest D.C. after a man was beaten unconscious with a tire iron early Wednesday morning, according to officials. • An employee at the Washington office of the Navajo Nation was arrested Friday after police said they found a loaded handgun in a suitcase she brought to a security entrance at the Cannon House Office Building.

The first victim died at the scene. The death brings to four the number of people killed over a violent weekend. Police have not made any arrests in the cases.”

Fox5DC: Northeast shooting leaves 1 dead, 3 injured, DC police say “Homicide detectives swarmed Northeast after they said a suspect killed a man and injured three others in a shooting late Thursday evening. DC police said the suspect opened fire at an Exxon gas station in the 3400 block of 18th Street, NE at about 7:45 p.m.

Washington Post: Two-vehicle crash reportedly kills one person near hospital “One person was reportedly killed Wednesday night in a two-vehicle crash in Northwest Washington just a few feet from Medstar Washington Hospital Center, District officials said. One of the vehicles crashed into a light pole and burst into flames in the 100 block of Irving Street just after 10 p.m., said Officer Hugh Carew, a D.C. police spokesman.”

Fox5DC: 2 arrested after man attacked with tire iron, DC police say “Two men were arrested in Northwest D.C. after a man was beaten unconscious with a tire iron early Wednesday morning, according to officials. The Metropolitan Police Department said a dispute sparked between the victim and the two suspects at about 2:15 a.m. in the 3600 block of Georgia Avenue, NW.”

Fox5DC: DC firefighter in critical condition after being hit by ladder truck “A rookie D.C. firefighter is fighting for his life after he was hit by a ladder truck at the scene of a house fire late Wednesday night on Capitol Hill. Dane Smothers, Jr., 28, is listed in critical condition in ICU at Washington Medstar Hospital.”

NBC Washington: DC National Night Out Offers Hope for Safer Communities “Metropolitan Police Department officers were out in seven districts Tuesday night, hoping to build bridges with the people they protect and serve as part of National Night Out. The city just saw nearly a dozen shootings in two days, but the goal of the night was to improve police-community relations and crime prevention.”

NBC Washington: Black Officers Worry Trump’s Comments Undermine Community Ties “The Trump administration’s tough talk on crime and treatment of suspects is concerning black police officers. After recent years of high-profile shootings of blacks by police, officers fear efforts to improve the relationship between police and minorities could be derailed.”

Washington Post: Quick officer responses result in more arrests in the District, says reports “The latest two of the weekly reports issued by D.C. police on robberies and arrests list 23 crimes in which arrests were made. According to the reports, arrests in 14 of the 23 robberies were made by officers who responded to the scene.”
NBC Washington: Police Officer, 2nd Driver Hurt in NW DC Crash “Officials say a police officer and a driver for a ride-hailing service were injured in a crash in Northwest Washington.”
Washington Post: Apartment building wall collapses under heavy rain, displacing 11 “Nearly a dozen people were displaced from an apartment building in Southeast Washington early Saturday after a wall collapsed because of heavy rain.”
