DC Crime Summary – December 17th - December 23rd, 2016

There were several violent crimes in the District this week. • A woman was forced into a van, robbed and assaulted early Sunday in the Mount Pleasant area. The victim was grabbed by one man and then attacked in the van by two others. After the robbery and assault, she was thrown out near the Woodley Park area. The persons of interest are described as black males in their late 30’s. • Clinton Wolmack, 27, was arrested in connection with the shooting death of Terry Crutchfield, 45, in an apartment building near the Deanwood Metro station on December 6th. The suspect allegedly shot and killed the victim as he attempted to rob people of synthetic marijuana. • Three robberies have been reported in about a week near a single street corner in the Edgewood neighborhood, the most recent on Monday night. In at least two of the robberies the victims were cab drivers and guns were shown in two of the three robberies. No suspect information is available at this time. • Robert Kelsey, 29, of DC, was sentenced to 50 years in prison Monday for sexually abusing an 11-year-old Maryland girl he met through Instagram. Kelsey was previously convicted of being an accessory in the 2005 shooting death of former DC council member Sandy Allen’s grandson, Jon Allen Jr., who was 15.

Washington Post: Woman kidnapped, robbed and assaulted in Mount Pleasant “A woman was forced into a van, robbed and assaulted early Sunday in the Mount Pleasant area of Northwest Washington, the D.C. police said. Police said she was walking in the 1600 block of Monroe Street NW about 3:30 a.m. when she was grabbed by one man and then attacked in the van by two others. After the robbery and assault, she was thrown out near the Woodley Park area, the police said.”

WUSA9: DC man admits making bomb threats for own amusement “A man suspected in a series of hoax bomb threats at or near landmarks in D.C. told police he made the calls because he was “high and upset” and thought it would be “funny.” The FBI arrested James Cherry on Dec. 16. In a previous interview with agents, the FBI said he admitted to phoning in three bomb threats this summer: one at Union Station, one near the White House, and one near McPherson Square Metro Station.”

Washington Post: Northeast D.C. man arrested in Dec. 6 fatal shooting in Deanwood neighborhood “D.C. police have arrested a suspect in the Dec. 6 shooting of a man who was found dead inside an apartment in Deanwood that authorities described as a place addicts gathered to use drugs.”

Washington Post: Barbershop owner who was ringleader of $20 million bogus tax scheme sentenced “A Southeast Washington barbershop owner who led a ring that cashed millions in tax refund checks from bogus federal returns and operated with a network of 400 addresses throughout the region was sentenced Tuesday in the scheme.”

Washington Post: Security guard beaten, robbed in store in SW Washington “D.C. police are looking for four men who authorities said robbed a private security guard of his wallet and beat him last week in a store in Southwest Washington. The incident occurred about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in the 1100 block of Fourth Street SW, near the Waterfront Metro station. A surveillance video captured part of the assault.”

Washington Post: Three robberies, two armed, in eight days near one NE intersection “Three robberies have been reported in about a week near a single street corner in Northeast Washington. In at least two of them, according to police, the victims were cab drivers. Guns were shown in two of the three robberies, police said all occurred in or near the 300 block of Evarts Street NE. Police said they think one man held up the cab drivers in the 300 block of Evarts St NE on Sunday and on Dec. 12. The third robbery in that location was reported Monday night.”

Washington Post: D.C. man sentenced to 50 years for sexually abusing child he met via Instagram “A District man previously convicted of being an accessory in the 2005 shooting death of a former council member’s grandson was sentenced to 50 years in prison Monday for sexually abusing an 11-year-old Maryland girl he met through Instagram. Robert Kelsey, 29, was found guilty Aug. 29 in a federal trial on three counts of aggravated child sex abuse and transport of a minor for the crime, after the then-26-year-old masked his identity online before picking up the girl from her Prince George’s County elementary school summer camp and raping her in his home on July 25, 2014.”

NBC Washington: DC-Area Police Step Up Security After Berlin Attack “Law enforcment groups across the Washington area are increasing patrols and upping security after a deadly attack on a Christmas market in Berlin. News4’s Meagan Fitzgerald explained what you’ll notice and what you may not.”

Washington Post: Fire destroys clubhouse at District Yacht Club in Southeast Washington “The clubhouse and two other buildings at the District Yacht Club near the Washington Navy Yard were destroyed in an early morning fire Monday, about 12 hours after members held a children’s Christmas party. Flames did not reach the 40 boats docked at slips in the Anacostia River, just behind the clubhouse in the 1400 block of Water Street SE, along a stretch of riverfront property known as Boathouse Row. No injuries were reported.”
