DC Crime Summary - August 4th - 10th 2017

There were two homicides and several violent crimes in the District this week. • A 22-year-old man was shot in the back and killed early Wednesday in the Anacostia neighborhood of Southeast Washington, according to D.C. police. The shooting occurred at about 1 a.m. in the 1200 block of W Street SE, in front of a church just off Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue. A man who D.C. police say crashed a vehicle in Northeast Washington on Saturday, killing a passenger and causing the car to burst into flames, told authorities he had smoked PCP before driving, according to court documents. A 17-year-old girl and a man were shot in Northeast D.C. Thursday afternoon, but police say they were not the intended targets. The shooting took place at around 3:30 p.m. at Saratoga Avenue and Montana Avenue. • Newly released video shows a woman running with a child in her arms as a shootout rages in Southeast D.C. DC police released the video on Thursday of the incident that happened in the 3600 block of 22nd Street, SE the evening of July 31 in hopes that releasing the video would help them identify the suspects. VIDEOPolice are investigating after three people were shot in Southeast, D.C. The shooting happened around 2 a.m. Monday on the 3700 block of 1st Street. Two men and a woman were shot. All are expected to survive. Metro Transit Police on Monday announced the arrest of Jermaine Brown, for the weekend shooting on a Metro car with 20 passengers on board, which left a teenager with a wound to the abdomen. Brown, 18, of Seat Pleasant, Md., was taken into custody by Metro police at a Capitol Heights motel late Sunday. • A woman with an unusual neck tattoo was arrested Monday after police say she threw a knife at a man during an argument in Takoma Park. 23-year-old Oluwafunmi Gbolade faces attempt 2nd degree murder, 1st degree assault and malicious destruction of property charges after the incident.

Washington Post: Man charged in weekend shooting on Metro car with 20 passengers on board “About 20 people were on board a moving Metrorail car Sunday when gunshots rang out near the Silver Spring station, leaving a teenager with a wound to the abdomen. Metro Transit Police on Monday announced the arrest of Jermaine Brown, 18, of Seat Pleasant, Md., who was taken into custody by Metro police at a Capitol Heights motel late Sunday. He was charged with first-degree assault in the shooting.”

Fox5DC: Teen girl, man shot in Northeast DC “A 17-year-old girl and a man were shot in Northeast D.C. Thursday afternoon, but police say they were not the intended targets. The shooting took place at around 3:30 p.m. at Saratoga Avenue and Montana Avenue. The female victim was taken to the hospital in critical condition while the other victim is expected to recover.”

Luckily, the front door was open of the brick house, but a wall of nearly impenetrable smoke kept them on the front steps calling back to the voice trapped inside.”
Fox5DC: Rookie DC firefighter still critical after being hit by ladder truck “A rookie D.C. firefighter remains in critical condition following a tragic accident at the scene of a house fire earlier this week. Dane Smothers, Jr. is still hospitalized at Washington Medstar Hospital.”
Washington Post: Controversial police T-shirt leads to dismissal in D.C. gun case “A D.C. judge dismissed a gun possession case amid questions over whether the arresting officers wore or had any role in the creation of a controversial T-shirt printed with the name of their police unit, an image of the Grim Reaper and a symbol that an advocacy group says is racist.”
Fox5DC: United Medical Center newborn nursery services restricted for 90 days “Newborn nursery services at United Medical Center have been restricted by the D.C. Department of Health. Health officials said the license for obstetric and nursery services at the hospital have been restricted for 90 days or until “the hospital implements its plan for obstetrics and nursery services.” The department of health did not elaborate on why the services were being restricted.”

NBC Washington: Police: Washington Having Least Violent Summer in 10 Years “The police chief in the nation’s capital says Washington is seeing its most peaceful summer in a decade. News outlets report Metropolitan Police Chief Peter Newsham says a comparison of the last 30 days to the same period in 2016 shows the city is seeing its lowest number of violent crimes in 10 years. He announced the decrease during a news conference Tuesday afternoon.”
Fox5DC: Police Chief Calls on DC Officer Who Shot, Killed Terrence Sterling to Resign “D.C.‘s police chief is calling for one of his officers to step down after federal prosecutors decided not to charge the officer who shot and killed an unarmed black motorcyclist. D.C. Police Officer Brian Trainer shot 31-year-old Terrence Sterling in northwest Washington Sept. 11, 2016.”
