DC Crime Summary - August 18th - 24th 2017

There were two homicides and several violent crimes this week in the District. A man was fatally stabbed Saturday night in the 800 block of Xenia Street SE, police said. The victim was identified as Anthony Graham, 40, of Southeast Washington. A second man was also stabbed in Saturday’s Xenia Street incident. He was critically injured in the incident, which occurred about 7:45 p.m. At least four other stabbings were reported in the District on Sunday. • A man from suburban Baltimore was shot and killed Wednesday afternoon in the Trinidad neighborhood of Northeast Washington, according to D.C. police. Balmore Mauricio Fuentes, 34, of Dundalk, Md., was shot in the head, police said. The shooting occurred about 1:45 p.m. in an alley behind a string of rowhouses in the 1100 block of Oates Street NE. • An 8-year-old boy was shot and wounded Saturday night in Southeast Washington, authorities said. The police said the child was grazed and his injuries were described as not life-threatening.The shooting occurred about 8 p.m. in the 1400 block of 41st Street SE, according to the police. • A juvenile was shot at a gas station in the District on Thursday, according to authorities. DC police said the boy was shot at a gas station in the 6300 block of Georgia Avenue, NW at about 4:45 p.m. Officials said the juvenile was conscious and breathing. • A man has been charged with stabbing his girlfriend Saturday night in his Logan Circle apartment after the two had argued and struck each other, D.C. police said. Marvin Iraheta-Grande, 24, of Northwest, was charged with assault with intent to kill. A man was arrested after allegedly trying to run over a female victim in D.C., according to authorities. D.C. Police arrested Anthony Castanho, 28, of Frederick on charges of Assault with a Dangerous Weapon.

Washington Post: Man dies after apparently jumping off pedestrian overpass in Northeast D.C. “A man was killed Thursday night when he apparently jumped from a pedestrian overpass onto the Anacostia Freeway in Northeast Washington and was then struck by a vehicle whose driver did not stop, D.C. police said.”

Washington Post: 8-year-old shot near recreation center in Southeast DC “An 8-year-old boy was shot and wounded Saturday night in Southeast Washington, authorities said. Washington Post: Man arrested in stabbing at Logan Circle apartment “A man has been charged with stabbing his girlfriend Saturday night in his Logan Circle apartment after the two had argued and struck each other, D.C. police said. Marvin Iraheta-Grande, 24, of Northwest, was charged with assault with intent to kill. Police did not learn about the stabbing until Sunday, after authorities said the boyfriend took the victim to an area hospital for treatment. The stabbing occurred about 10:30 p.m. Saturday in 1400 block of R Street NW.”

WJLA: Man arrested for allegedly trying to run over female victim in DC, police say “A man was arrested after allegedly trying to run over a female victim in D.C., according to authorities. D.C. Police arrested Anthony Castanho, 28, of Frederick on charges of Assault with a Dangerous Weapon. Police accuse Castanho of “accelerating his vehicle” towards the female and trying to hit her with it in the 1200 block of Connecticut Avenue NE at around 1:04 a.m.

Fox5DC: DC couple robbed at knifepoint on 14th Street while pushing baby in stroller “A DC couple pushing their 6-week-old baby in a stroller was robbed at knifepoint in the middle of the day on a busy corridor of 14th Street, according to police. The frightening ordeal happened on Saturday at noon in the 1400 block of Corcoran Street, right off 14th Street.”

Fox5DC: DC construction worker dead after eight-story fall “D.C. fire officials say a construction worker was killed after falling eight stories to the ground on Thursday. The accident happened at a construction site on N Street NE. Emergency crews were called around 2:10 p.m.

NBC Washington: Double-Length Metrobus Crashes in NW DC, Eight Injured “A crash involving a double-length D.C. Metrobus injured eight people Sunday afternoon in northwest Washington. D.C. Fire and EMS said seven people were transported with non-life-threatening injuries, and another person was taken to the hospital with a medically-related injury.”

Fox5DC: Providence Hospital in NE DC considering scale back of maternity and mental health care “A northeast D.C. hospital is undergoing changes including a proposed scale back of obstetric care and mental health services. Providence Health System wants to transform their health facilities into a “Health Village,” focusing on personalized care including both health and non-health services.”

NBC Washington: Trump Approves Washington DC-Area Transit Safety Commission “A transit safety commission for the Washington, D.C.-area has been approved by President Donald Trump. Trump signed a resolution Tuesday allowing Maryland, Virginia and D.C. to create the Metro Safety Commission as federal authorities have temporarily handled safety oversight and withheld funding from local transit agencies.”

Washington Post: D.C. fire boat sinks while docked in Southwest Washington “The newest boat in the D.C. fire department’s three-vessel fleet sank Wednesday morning while docked at a marina at the Southwest Waterfront Park. Officials said they are investigating a possible mechanical failure.”
