Crime Update from the DC Police Union, City Wide

DC Crime Summary – June 17th – 23rd

There were 6 homicides this past week and 132 violent crimes. Compared to this time last year homicides increased by 19% and violent crime has also increased.

Three more people overdosed from a synthetic drug outside of Minnesota Market in Northeast. The market was previously victim to an armed robbery with a gun, and the robber demanded synthetic marijuana.

A dead body was found burning inside of a garbage bin near Gallaudet University Tuesday morning. Authorities are investigating the incident.

Malek Mercer, 15, died Saturday from injuries sustained after he was shot Tuesday at a bus stop near Fort Stanton Park. He was previously being held on life support and he was not expected to survive. Derryck Anjuan Decuir, 22, was arrested Friday in connection with the incident.

Joel Johnson, 53, was stabbed and killed in Glover Park Friday night. No suspect information is available at this time and police are investigating the incident.

Larry Michael Lockhart, 25, was found shot and killed near Gallaudet University Wednesday morning, June 17th. No suspect information is available at this time, and authorities are investigating the incident.

Antonio Lee Bryant, 28, was identified as the man who was shot and killed Wednesday night, June 17th, near Anacostia Park. No suspect information is available at this time, and authorities are investigating the incident.

Patrick Shaw, 26, man was fatally shot late Thursday, June 18th, in the Shaw neighborhood. No suspect information is available at this time.

Loretta Hall, 48, was arrested in connection in the stabbing and killing of Kenneth Fogle, 54 in the Douglass neighborhood on June 13th.

Brian Sickles, 42, was shot and killed Thursday morning in the Benning Ridge neighborhood. DC Police found 22 shell cases at the scene of the crime.

James Izlar, 37, was sentenced to 12 years in jail after he was charged sexually abusing two girls at a home in Southeast.

Washington Post: Police investigating body found in creek in Northwest Washington “D.C. police are investigating the death of a 47-year-old North Carolina man whose body was pulled from a creek near Georgetown in Northwest Washington on Monday. Authorities identified the man as Ronald A. Windsor of Vale, N.C. Police said they are awaiting the results of an autopsy to determine how he died. Homicide detectives have been assigned to the case.”

Washington Post: Body found in burning trash bin in Northeast Washington “District police are investigating a body was that found Tuesday morning in a burning trash bin in the Trinidad neighborhood of Northeast Washington. Officer Sean Hickman, a D.C. police spokesman, said the body was found about 5:40 a.m. in the 1200 block of Holbrook Terrace NE, about a block from West Virginia Avenue and the campus of Gallaudet University.”

NBC Washington: Woman Charged With Murder Smoked Synthetic Drug: PD “A Southeast D.C. woman has been charged with stabbing a man to death after she told police she had smoked synthetic marijuana and a bloody knife was found in a cat litter box inside her home. Loretta “Candy” Hall, 48, was charged Friday with fatally stabbing Kenneth Fogle, 54, police said Monday.”

Armed robbers steal drugs and cash from Palisades Pharmacy in Northwest

June 22nd

MyFoxDC: 1 shot in northeast “Police are investigating a shooting in northeast D.C. The shooting happened around 9 p.m. Sunday in the 2100 block of H Street in northeast. Investigators say a man was shot at the location. Officers have no information regarding suspects or motives.”

WUSA9: Man injured after being stabbed in Northeast, D.C. “A man has life-threatening injuries after being stabbed in Northeast, D.C. Monday morning, D.C. police said. The stabbing happened in the 3400 block of 22nd Street in Northeast, D.C., authorities said. The man was found conscious with life-threatening injuries.”

Washington Post: Woman arrested in connection with fatal D.C. stabbing “D.C. police arrested a 48-year-old woman in connection with the stabbing death of a Southeast Washington man, authorities said Sunday. Members of the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force captured Loretta Hall, also of Southeast Washington, on Friday, according to a department press release.”

June 20th

Washington Post: Teenager, 15, shot in neck on Tuesday dies of his injuries, D.C. police say “A 15-year-old Ballou High School sophomore who was shot in the neck after getting off a bus early Tuesday in Southeast Washington died of his injuries Saturday, D.C. police said. Malek Mercer’s mother, Sharon Becks, had said her son was on life support at a hospital and was not expected to survive.”

Washington Post: D.C. police investigating slaying outside Glover Park mission “A man described by police as being homeless was fatally injured Friday night under a portico in a courtyard of the St. Luke’s Mission Center in Northwest Washington’s Glover Park neighborhood, authorities said. Joel Johnson, 53, was pronounced dead at the scene, said D.C. police, who responded about 10 p.m. to the church complex in the 3600 block of Calvert Street NW, near Wisconsin Avenue and the U.S. Naval Observatory.”

Washington Post: Police investigate fatal shooting in the Shaw neighborhood of NW D.C. “D.C. Police said Friday they are investigating a homicide that happened just before midnight in the Shaw neighborhood of Northwest Washington. Authorities said they received a report of several shots being fired in the 1300 block of Fifth Street NW. When they arrived, they found a wounded man. He was transported to an area hospital, where he died.”

NBC Washington: Man Killed in Hail of Bullets on H Street SE “A man was shot on H Street SE, near the Maryland border, late Thursday morning. The victim was killed as more than 20 shots were fired about 11:30 a.m. near 51st and H streets SE, police said. The Metropolitan Police Department found 22 shell casings on the scene of the crime committed in broad daylight.”

MyFoxDC: EXCLUSIVE VIDEO: 3 people overdose from synthetic drug in front of NE DC store “For weeks, we have been telling you about people overdosing on synthetic marijuana in the District. On Monday, the mayor responded with emergency legislation to shut down places that sell the illegal product. Washington Post: Man fatally shot in Southeast Washington “A 28-year-old man was fatally shot Thursday night in Southeast Washington, according to D.C. police. The victim was identified as Antonio Lee Bryant of Southeast. He was pronounced dead on the scene. Police said he was found shot about 8:40 p.m. in the 3300 block of D Street SE, in the Greenway neighborhood alongside Anacostia Park.”

WUSA9: Man sentenced for sexually abusing 2 girls in DC home “A D.C. man was sentenced to 12 years in prison Thursday for sexually abusing two girls at a home in Southeast, D.C., officials said. James Izlar, 37, of D.C. was sentenced to 12 years in prison on charges stemming from sexually abusing two girls at the home they were staying in Southeast, D.C., the US Attorney’s Office of District of Columbia said.”

NBC Washington: 21-Year-Old Woman Missing From D.C. Since May 30 “D.C. police are asking for the public’s help finding a 21-year-old woman who has been missing since May 30. Juelle Bembry was last seen in the 700 block of Rock Creek Church Road NW.”

Washington Post: Man is found unconscious after shooting in Southeast D.C. “A man was shot and critically wounded Wednesday night in Southeast Washington, where police found the victim unconscious, D.C. police said. Officers responded to the shooting in the 3300 block of D Street SE about 9 p.m., said Lt. Sean Conboy, a police spokesman. The man was not alert or breathing when found by authorities.”

Washington Post: Police investigating killing of a 25-year-old man in Northeast Washington “D.C. Police are investigating a homicide of a 25-year-old man that occurred in Northeast Washington. The incident happened early Wednesday in the 1300 block of Orren Street NE. Officers responded to the area after a report of gunshots sounds, around 12:13 a.m. They found Larry Michael Lockhart of Northeast Washington suffering from gunshot wounds.”

Crime Tip of the Week

According to statistics provided by the DC Police Union, there has been a recent string of violent crimes committed by suspects driving ATVs and dirt bikes. While these vehicles are illegal to use on DC city streets, many still use the vehicles in pedestrian heavy areas. If you witness an illegal ATV or dirt bike driver operating on city streets please report it to DC Police by calling 911.
