10 Important Winter Weather Tips

A blizzard is expected to hit the District starting Friday afternoon. Various media outlets have predicted that approximately 15 to 25 inches of snow will fall from Friday to Sunday, and it is important that everyone prepares for the storm.

Below are some tips to keep safe before, during, and after the storm.

  1. If you own a home, place rock salt along any walkways and driveways of your home. This will help melt the ice and snow as it falls. You can also learn about more environment friendly replacement products for rock salt by clicking here.
  2. Try not to let pets go outside during the snowstorm. Unattended pets and/or outside cats are especially high risk to get lost.
  3. If possible, stay home during the blizzard. If you have to go out outside, dress warmly with a scarf, winter coat, a hat, gloves, and layered clothing.
  4. Do not leave a space heater near any combustible products.
  5. Ensure that you have sufficient antifreeze levels in your automobile(s).
  6. To prevent yourself from having to go outside, try to get groceries and other essentials ahead of time.
  7. Find the water shut off valve in your home so you can turn it off if a pipe explodes.
  8. Only drive if it is absolutely necessary, and don’t travel alone. Also, let someone know your route and when you expect to be home.
  9. If you have to go outside, make sure to take any wet clothing off when you get home. Also, do not let the heat in your apartment or home get below 55 degrees.
  10. Keep a flashlight and other emergency equipment handy.
